This is a fluid painting, built around the movement of the medium. This painting contains two of my favourite symbols: a cherry tree and the sun. Like many of my paintings it is influenced by Japanese splashed ink paintings which highlight the vastness of the natural world, you could say that I use a “splashed paint” technique here instead of ink. Cherry trees are such a symbol of the hope of things to come, and the sun is a life-giving force.
These symbols are set against an abstract background. There are many undercoats of paint in this piece and also any amount of layers of interpretation, I always like viewers to find their own meaning but for me it is pointing to our integral place in the natural world which is beautiful and endangered. The abstract backdrop shows us that nothing is clear-cut in this world.
